The Confession Of Haggard

Daniel Dixon
Miss Kim
English 10 (per.3)
10/7/09

Ted Haggard, 52, in his confession speech he talks about how he lied about having sexual relations with another man. His argument during this speech was how Ted Haggard had gay relations with a man named Mike Jones and they have been having relations for about three years and haggard was using methamphetamine in his presence. Ted is now overcoming therapy to try and figure out why he is having these urges. Ted Haggard acknowledged that his actions were very hypocritical, but he could not control himself.

" I felt like gods plan was for sexuality to be in a monogamous, heterosexual marriage." (Haggard Paragraph 10). This tells the audience that he knew he was being very hypocritical, but in the same way trying to gain sympathy from the readers and listener's to feel his pain. His intended effect on the audience is that he, himself, is under a tremendous amount of stress, between his job and at home, and for people to listen to why he lied about this hypocritical event.

Ted Haggard, to me is not believable or trustworthy because he already lied once and it can happen again. One reason why i don't think Ted Haggard is trustworthy because once someone lies they tend to lie again and in this case it will ruin his marriage. In some cases I could find him trustworthy and believable because he has already confessed, so all along he wanted to tell, but just didn't have enough strength to tell friends, family, and the public. Even if Haggard was accused of such disgusted actions he still lives a happy moral life with his family without any lies.
